In the English learning area, students study, use, and enjoy language and听literature, communicated orally, visually, and in writing, for a range of purposes听and audiences, and in a variety of text forms. Learning about language and听literature from Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world enables students听to build literacy, walk in different worlds, access the thoughts and perspectives听of others, and make linguistic and cultural connections. Engaging with听m膩tauranga M膩ori through the creation and interpretation of texts provides听opportunities to strengthen knowledge and understanding of te ao M膩ori and听M膩ori perspectives, and to play a part in giving effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

English is a fun and multi-faceted subject which helps us better understand ourselves and engage in the world around us. We aim to provide a broad programme, which is relevant to student interests, appropriate to needs and responsive to best teaching practice. We believe that learning should be engaging and appropriately challenging, and that students should experience success. We will explore written, oral and visual language.

Each term a thematic module will be studied during which the values and principles of Te M膩taiaho (the Refreshed New Zealand Curriculum, 2023) will be promoted and a range of texts will be studied so that across the year all learning objectives can be met. The aim is for learner-focussed lessons where students are offered choice and are collaborating, reflecting, thinking critically, problem-solving, innovating, using portfolios and connecting learning. It is our aim that we all have an enjoyable, successful and challenging experience in English.
